This book was wonderful and I will use it when we go to Italy. It is thorough and begins with a section on "What's New" to update with changes to traveling to this country...followed by quick facts with the pages marked in RED. This guide also gives you a full size map of Rome in the back for removal from the guide.
This Guide's chapters on all the places to see begins with a nice description of the area you will travel in, followed by an orientation of the area. The authors then proceed to describe things to see and places to stay along with dining choices. They list them from most expensive to least.
What I enjoyed the most with this guide is the "Quick Tips" they scatter throughout about things to watch for, safety, fun, taxi's, smoking, eating, drinking, shopping, etc. etc. Maps are also laid out in each section you would travel to, to help get a feel for the location.
This guide also has airline, airport, bus, train and taxi information in great detail. Websites are also offered for you to do your own research on everything from hotels to Eurail and local train schedules. It will give you the best advice on what to avoid and what is not to be missed.
All in all while reading this guide, I literally felt as though I was taken on a guided tour of Italy by a friend who had already traveled there. The writing style is entertaining, yet informative. I felt just about every question I had about Italy is answered in this guide. Hotels may or may not offer breakfast with the room charge, but the guide informs you of this. You will be advised if rates include breakfast, taxes and all charges. No hidden surprises at checkout. This guide also offers star ratings from most preferred to least.
And it seems lately, Italy is adopting similar laws in some areas, same as the UK and the US, against smoking indoors. To what degree is yet to be determined as of the writing of this guide. For those who smoke this may be a problem, and for those who don't this may be a plus. Either way, Italy is not to be missed.
Frommer's Italy 2006 is a very complete and easy to read travel guide. I especially enjoyed the restaurant tips (off the beaten track and very "Italian") and the maps.
To be even more appealing and to obtain 5 stars, it would have to have more pictures to get a better impression of the sites.
This is a great book for planning your travel. I wish I'd bought it before I'd booked my leave. The only downside I can think of is the included map. From the product description I thought it would be of all Italy but it's only a map of Rome.
