Great Cruise Guide

When we decided we were going on a Mediterranean Cruise we knew exactly what we would need - Anne Vipond's "The Complete Guide to Mediterranean Cruising." Her books are compact, but filled with information needed for a succesful cruise. The book does not go into great detail about the history of the different ports but what it does have is great information on life on a cruiseship, and what to expect at each port such as: docking information, shore excursions, safety, and maps of each port.
We used her "Cruising the Panama Canal" a couple years ago and found it indispensable.

helpful in some areas, lacking in others

This book is really good for giving an overview of each of the cities we are going to on our cruise and has really helpful information in the front section (especially since I've never been on a cruise) about what to expect, pack, etc. But the one thing it is lacking that would be extremely helpful is helping us decide which cities we should do shore excursions in and what we should really focus on seeing. Most cruiselines offer shore excursions, but we've had a lot of trouble deciding if we should do them or if we would be better off touring on our own. So adding a section like that would be really helpful. Also, it would be nice if maps were drawn to scale and had a scale on them since it's hard to also judge distances. So overall a pretty good book, just wish it had more practical information.

OK overall

I bought this book to research stops on our first European trip. I would have liked more detailed information about museums and their hours and costs. Also more info about making any reservations and purchasing tickets ahead of time. Overall it is somewhat helpful in planning what to see and do. The walking maps are very good.
