Great book!

This is a wonderfully colourful introduction to the rich world of historical French theatre and cuisine to be found in the famed City of Light. It captures that special spirit of Paris that has made the city a magnet for generations of writers, actors, and poets - both French and English speaking - who have gone on to become legends, whether it be 400 years ago or in the past century. Few travel guides offer the depth provided in this comprehensive look at the history that lies behind the city's magic.

Beginning as an autobiographical account of the author's arrival in the late 1960s, the book takes the reader on a journey through the streets of Paris, where around every corner stands a legendary venue, where the greatest writers and actors would gather, whether to perform or revel in culinary delights. Drawing on a wide body of anecdotes and historical research, the twenty chapters trace the lives and careers of the most legendary theatrical figures, their relationships, and the inspiration they drew from each other, moving down through the generations.

Illustrated with original colour photos of many of the famous theatrical landmarks, the book also includes a selection of classic quotes, from Shakespeare to Oscar Wilde to George Bernard Shaw, which add a nice touch to this charming exploration of the city and the people that shaped the history of the theatre, from Moliere to the present day. Highly recommended!
