I am quite close to the age at which Irv set out, and, mirabilus dictu, I am but a short ferry ride from Seattle. So I opened this as a lifestyle manual. That's what it is/was: not just a how to cheap travel, but a blueprint for a guy in his early 60s without entanglements of any sex or age to roll the casino dice and care about the outcome. I near to teared at a couple of places, the specifics now forgot, which is a good indication that the prose works at an appropriate level.
I still have a few years until I become a senior citizen, but this book is an inspiration that I will have many years to come as a world traveller. Irv Thomas writes poetically about his travels through Europe as a low-income 60-something-year-old. This kind of travel isn't for everyone, but it's fun to read about even if you don't dare to do it yourself.
